Various Happenstances of Seth
January 23, 2006
Surprisingly, I am not a huge fan*
of some modern technologies. I don't have a car (though I can appreciate
the utility of them), I don't have a TV (even though I've been offered
one for free), and I downright dislike cell phones. This has prompted
me to say that I would almost be a Luddite, if not for my crippling
addiction to computers.
So, okay, I'm a computer addict.
I love video games, I love email, and I love the Internet**.
And while I am by no means a computer expert, I have a basic knowledge
of how computers work. This puts me far ahead of some people in
my family.
My aunt, for example, emailed me last November for help purchasing
some toner cartridges online. This would not be remarkable, except
for the fact that she had already asked someone else for help, who
had emailed her incredibly detailed step-by-step instructions for
how to do so. Being the helpful person I am, I went through the
site and filled out most of the information for her, so she would
only need to log in and check out.
This turned out to be insufficient, and she asked me to finish
ordering the cartridges for her. Being the mischevious person I
am, I did so, but added an extra line to her address while I was
there.
I had totally forgotten about this until Christmas break, when
my aunt called me and said, "My cartridges came today -- and
they were addressed to Luddite Incorporated."
This made me somewhat pleased, because I got to enjoy my own joke
all over again. And apparently the fellow who came over to help
her install the cartridges really enjoyed seeing that on the label.
So, a good one-time gag, right? Well, here's the best part: I just
got an email from my aunt explaining that she was shopping online,
and began getting emails that said, "Dear Luddite Incorporated..."
She doesn't know how to remove the line from her address.
I told her that when she earns the right to remove it, she'll know
how.
*Though I am a huge fan of the huge fan.
