Various Happenstances of Seth

April 30, 2006

I realize I haven't blogged much of late, but that's not always a bad thing. I was saying to another humor writer I recently met that I have a day job, writing work, and a blog, and I can accomplish two out of three. More often than not it's the day job and the blog, but lately I'm hoping to do the day job and the writing work. Of course, in an ideal world, I don't need a day job and I just do the writing.

My point is, if I haven't updated my blog in a long time, sometimes it means I've actually been vaguely productive. For example, my Sauceror defeated the golems and the Sorceress to free the King, thereby saving the kingdom temporarily. But no, I've been doing other things that were fairly productive. I went to the humor conference in Dayton, Ohio, and had a fantastic time. And that is a testament to the wonderful people I met there, because Dayton is a town where, I kid you not, the fine dining list includes the airport Cinnabon.*

I met a number of fellow humor writers, and in some ways, felt I had discovered a new group of old friends. Some of them I hope to work with in the future, if they remember me. And they might well remember me, because I did my first 6 minutes of stand-up comedy ever for the conference, and although there were a dozen performers, I received more groaning than everyone else combined. Which I guess is what I get for making as many bad puns on stage as I do in real life.

I met the family of humor legend Erma Bombeck (who saw my performance)(the family, not her; she's been dead for years), and even got to meet Dave Barry (who has been alive for years), who gave a speech that sounded just like one of his columns.** All in all, it was a great way to end March.

April, meanwhile, was a good month for my poetry. I won a local poetry slam by improvising two poems about topics shouted out by the audience. And then I won BBSpot.com's annual Geek Limerick Contest, in a repeat (albeit delayed) of my 2003 victory in that forum. The link is on my frontpage, if you want to go read my winning entry and some honorable mentions.

As for May, I don't expect to be updating much. Why? I'm supposed to be writing a book. No, not the book I've been working on forever. Well, yes, I'm supposed to be writing that one too. Or more precisely, finishing final edits and finding an agent or publisher. But that may have to wait, because I contracted to do another book, and my first deadline for a big chunk of it is June 1st. Which means it's quite possible that this blog will remain quiet for the month of May.

But be patient, and I promise you, I'll have something cool for you in June.

*Note to mayor of Dayton: I'm available for motivational speeches.

**In fact, maybe it was. Everyone else steals from Dave Barry, why shouldn't he?
